The general body colour of this typical tetra is yellow. The initial rays of the anal fin are coloured a slightly deeper yellow, followed instantly by an intense black stripe; the bottom edge of this fin is also black streaked, and also the front rays of the dorsal fin are black also. The upper half of the eye is vivid red, and also the lower half is yellow.
These fish have been bred successfully in captivity, but they’re not effortlessly induced to spawn, neither are the fry simple to rear, but this reality should not stop the enthusiastic aquarist from trying his hand.
In general, the instructions for breeding given for H. innesi apply equally well for H. pulchripinnis. The water depth should be about three inch, and slightly alkaline (pH 7.2 – 7.4). Rain water or distilled water mixed with tap water is essential for breeding this species. The plants should be fine leafed, well cleaned, and left totally free floating in fairly dense clusters.
Don’t use any sand on the floor of the aquarium. Strong artificial or direct natural lighting is harmful to ova and fry up to two weeks old. As a result, make certain that only a subdued top light is utilized during this period. The breeding temperature is 80° F.
